A big day today with the Pro-Am being the last big event of the year. The course is looking great and, with a mixture of benign conditions, fast running fairways and lovely greens you had better have your low-scoring boots on!
Straight after this we're into a Summer Open on the last Bank Holiday Monday of the year.
Once this is over we are really starting to prepare for our main aeration week. We'll probably double scarify the greens during the week, in preparation for aeration and top dressing. I'll also give the greens a booster feed as the less desirable grasses are stressing a bit. When you set a programme out biased towards finer grasses the Poa certainly doesn't feel happy.
During aeration week we'll verti-drain some greens and solid tine others as we're are always looking to alternate aeration depth as this helps with drainage below the surface. As the season winds down we'll also revert to slitting the greens which gives us a further depth variation .
As for top dressing, we will probably apply around 35 tonnes by hand, and hopefully brush it in before any dampness sets in. You just have to pray for good weather on this particular week to get all the tasks completed. The imporatance of this maintenance should not be under-estimated in any overall plan to acheive firm, free-draining greens. Its all part of the cycle that supports the finer, more sustainable grasses.
That's all for now except for a big thanks to the lads for once again helping me to produce a fine course.
