A very warm welcome to the Junior page of Hexham Golf Club, hopefully you can find out everything you need to know about our junior section on this page, but if not please do not hesitate to give one of our Junior Organisers a call. Hexham Golf Club is delighted to promote and encourage junior golf with a full programme of coaching, competitions, and special events for all ages and abilities. We have a one of the strongest junior sections in the County, with over 100 junior members ranging from 7 to 18yrs, and we help ensure that their golf is fun, exciting and extremely rewarding. The junior coaching programmes ran by our forward thinking professionals Andy Paisley and Chris McDonnell has helped create one of the most progressive junior sections in the County, and with the support of the older members we have a very bright future for Hexham Golf Club Junior section. Two of the junior sections proudest moments came in 2010 and 2011 - see article below. Hexham’s Junior Team 2011 August update

It has been another successful year for Hexham’s Junior Team, and some excellent individual performances from Hexham Junior Team players. Following on from Hexham’s 2010 Northumberland County League Championships and North of England Championship Winning Team the 2011 team recently fell just one match short of a unique County double by finishing Runners-Up in the County League Championships having only lost one match from sixty all season in the Divisional qualifiers.

Team member Jonny Richardson won the County Schools Championship at the start of the 2011 season, and Jonny was also part of the team (with Chris Lamb & James Dunn) who won the County Schools Team Championships. This qualified them for the EGU National finals at Woodhall Spa; unfortunately James could not play in the finals and another Hexham team member Josh Stancer made the journey south.

Three of our Junior members, Chris Lamb, Jonny Richardson and Ali Harris qualified through the 36 hole qualifier for the quarter finals of the Mens Club Championships, sadly noone progressed beyond that stage this year, however Jonny and Chris continue to be part of the mens Hadrian League team.

In August four junior team members made the journey North to take part in the prestigious St Andrews Boys Championships which attracts 150 of some of the best Under 19 players from across the UK, and players from Europe and USA. The Championship starts with a stroke play qualifier then match play knockout stages. With the cut for the scratch championship being 73 around the St Andrews links Eden Course remarkably three out of the four Hexham players qualified; Marcus Mellor 70, Matty Lamb 72 (the youngest competitor), and Chris Lamb 73. Josh Stancer, the fourth member also played very well shooting 76 which qualified him for the Nett Matchplay. Josh going on to reach the quarter finals. Unfortunately the other three players lost at the scratch matchplay stage, Chris and Marcus losing out to the eventual winner and runner-up, Marcus being 1 under par in his match through 15 holes, losing 3&2, tough school!

The following week 13 year old Matty Lamb headed North again for the Scottish Open U14’s Boys Strokeplay Championships which again attracted the very best young players from around the UK and Europe. Matt finished 6th shooting 72, from a field of 100, and was only three shots off the winning score from Irelands Matt Boucher. Matt was the highest U13 finisher, 2nd English finisher, and still has another year in the U14 age group so fingers crossed for 2012! Matty also played in every junior team match this season and has finished as the top team performer with 23pts from his 13 matches played, winning 11 matches, halving one match and only losing one match on the 18th hole.

The success of the junior section is largely down to the dedication of the players and professionals at Hexham Golf Club, however without the support and dedication of the Junior Captain Sam Storey, and Junior Organisers John Storey, Helen & Simon Armstrong, Jimmy Richardson, Angela Gilhespy, and Darren Lamb then the junior section would not be what it is today.

The junior section would also like to thank Mark & Lucy Stancer, Elaine Storey, and Richard Mellor for their help in 2011, without them it would have been impossible! and finally if we have forgotten someone – sorry and thanks!
